Brewing news Ireland: Diageo plans expanding its operations at Guinness brewery in Dublin

Diageo announced the intention to expand its operations at the Guinness brewery in Dublin, The Sunday Business Post announced on September 8.

According to the company it was planning to use the St James's Gate facility to produce all Guinness sold on the Irish and British markets. It said this move would result in a 50% increase in production, bringing output up to 3 million pints-a-day.

In April 2004, Diageo announced its intention to transfer the brewing of Guinness for the UK market to Dublin. This transfer of production has now been completed after a €24m capital expansion investment programme.

Diageo says that St James' Gate is now one of the most modern breweries in the world. The site occupies 55 acres and employs 1,200 people. 'The brewing expansion we are celebrating here today further consolidates Diageo's already strong position in Ireland,' commented Lord Blyth, Chairman of Diageo.

'We now have the production centres for two of our largest international brands - Guinness and Baileys - located in this country. Between them they contribute nearly €750m to Irish exports each year. We now brew Guinness for Ireland, the UK, most European markets and the draught Guinness for the US here on this historic St James' Gate site,' he added.

Each year, Diageo invests about €230m in marketing the Guinness brand around the world.

Guinness is sold in more than 150 countries worldwide. 10 million glasses of Guinness are consumed every day around the world. There are two main Guinness variants accounting for over 90% of total volume worldwide. Guinness Draught - predominantly in Europe, North America, Japan and Australia. Guinness Foreign Extra Stout - predominantly in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean.
